About Us
Department of Communications
Prepare. Improve. Impress.
The BYU Department of Communications helps its students earn a career, not just credits. With nationally recognized programs in four emphases, the Department provides industry-leading curriculum and hands-on lab experiences to its students. Students gain a strong foundation in media ethics, multimedia usage and communications strategy and writing.
After being accepted into the limited enrollment programs, students produce work for real clients. Each student is required to complete an internship prior to graduation, and BYU communications students have interned at some of the largest and most prestigious agencies, news organizations and nonprofits around the world.
BYU communications students are set apart from their peers because of their dedication to professionalism and desire to give back to the profession. Taught by experts in the field, students gain real-world experience as they prepare to be future professional leaders.

Journalism
BYU’s journalism program is on the forefront of the ever-changing industry, providing students experience in broadcast, print and multimedia.
With a foundation in news and feature writing plus special emphases in new media and design, students learn to present clear and compelling stories through traditional and interactive media.
Broadcast journalism students master the art of combining strong writing with visual production. They work as reporters, anchors and cameramen as they produce the half-hour newscast The Daily News, which airs in multiple markets.
Journalism students write and design the campus newspaper The Daily Universe. The award-winning newspaper allows students to improve and expand their writing skills under professional direction. Multimedia journalism is featured on the student-run universe.byu.edu.
Comms Studies
Students in communications studies gain a broad understanding of all communications emphases and media. Students research the latest developments in the communications industry with cutting edge technology, including the nation’s only collegiate eye-tracking lab.
Students develop a strong basis in ethics and communications strategy, giving them an advantage as they go on to pursue advanced academic degrees. The communications studies emphasis serves as a jumping-off point for advanced degrees, with many students going on to earn degrees in law, public administration, communications, journalism and business.
Graduate Programs
Through its M.A. in Mass Communications, the BYU Department of Communications provides graduate students with critical thinking and research skills to prepare them for a doctorial degree or an immediate career.
The program is designed to provide students with a broad sense of the influence and impact mass media has on society. Students can tailor their experience to focus on any number of specialized topics including communications history, international communications issues or persuasion and public opinion.
